BABY BULLETS ARE CHAMPIONS!!!
April 20, 2007
A whole lot has happened since the last update on March 28th. The Baby
Bullets continued their dominating playoff run, winning both of their final playoff round robin games and earning a berth
in the finals.
On April 3rd, the Baby Bullets pumelled the Rangers by a score of 8-3.
Ben Ashkin lead the way with 3 goals and 2 assists, while Brandon Spears set a season high for himself with 2 goals and 2
assists.
April 10th was a must win for the Baby Bullets, and the team
delivered. The Baby Bullets defeated the Spitfires in a 5-4 nailbiter. Mike Adelson lead the way with a career tying 4 goal
effort. Brandon Spears remained hot with a goal and 2 assists.
The victory against the Spitfires earned the team a spot in the championship
game against a surprise finalist; the Renegades.
Starting goaltender Benji Lightstone broke his hand a few days before
the game, meaning that Dustin Stroll would be manning the net for the final game.
Stroll came in after a winter full of off-ice training but very little
on-ice practice, and he delivered big time.
The Baby Bullets were extremely solid defensively throughout the game.
Whenever they made mistakes, Stroll was there to bail them out.
The guys jumped out to an early 2-0 lead and really sat back after
that.
"Strolly promised a spectacular performance, and he didn't let us down,"
Mike Adelson said after the game.
"We scored a couple of quick ones and then trapped the life out of
them," Brandon Spears added.
The game ended a bit ugly. With only a few minutes to go, an opponent
attacked Brandon Spears from behind. After some heavy pushing and shoving, the referee gave Spears a game misconduct,
and the player who attacked him only received a two minute minor.
Would the team be able to hold on to their lead without the services
of the captain? Before the Baby Bullets even had a chance to think, the Renegades had scored with two minutes to
go to cut the lead to one.
"It was at that point that I told everyone on the bench to keep their
cool and to just keep doing what we've been doing all game long," Adelson explained to reporters.
It was a very close finish, but Stroll kept the team in it. Steven
Spears, Mike Adelson and Ben Ashkin were all called for various questionable penalties with around thirty seconds left in
the game, but the Renegades just couldn't beat Stroll.
After clearing the puck with only a few seconds to go, the penalized
players and rest of the bench raced towards their goaltender to celebrate the championship.
As Brandon Spears was (wrongfully) ejected, Mike Adelson took
his place in receiving the Pavilion Cup trophy for the team.
It was a fantastic ride for the Baby Bullets this season. After winning
seven games in a row early in the season, the team lost five of their next six, and there were tons of questions swirling.
But the true leaders of the team overcame the adversity and brought ultimate glory to all those who dawned the jersey of the
Baby Bullets.
And on that note, theres less than a month until the big boys -
The Bullets - drop the puck on their first game. GO BULLETS GO!
BABY BULLETS PLAYOFF UPDATE:
March 28th, 2007
You've got to love this Baby Bullets team! After finishing
first overall in the regular season, the team has picked up right where they left off for the playoffs. Having now completed
four out of five round-robin games, the Baby Bullets record stands at 3-0-1.
Team confidence is at an all time high right now, and defenseman Mike
Adelson says it will carry over to the big team in the summer. "Regardless of what happens the rest of the way, I have learned
a lot this season", Mike Adelson said. "I know that myself as well as all other summer Bullets players will bring an entire
new attitude to the summer team. I'm confident that we will be just as competitive as we have been in the winter thus far",
he continued.
Historically, Bullets teams have had terrible third periods. The teams
clutch play late in the game had always been a problem for captain Brandon Spears in the past. Last night may skewer his perspective
a bit.
Down 3-1 with only a few minutes remaining, the Baby Bullets really
stepped it up, and, thanks to Joey Evans, tied the game with only 30 seconds left. This forced a shootout. Without last
week's shootout hero Brandon Spears, the team looked to their leaders and goaltender to put the game away and steal the extra
point. Mike Adelson answered the call first, as he wired a wrist shot past the goalie's glove. Goaltender Benji Lightstone
answered second, as he stopped 2 out of 3 shots in the shootout to make Adelson's goal the clincher.
"It was the best comeback any Bullets team has ever had", Ari Greenberg
said after the game".
On his first goal of the season, Evans commented, "All my hard work
paid off. I just started using a new stick, and its paid off immediately! I've really been working on my positioning and shots
during practice. Tonight was proof that practice is the key to success".
Brandon Spears, on a scouting assignment at an undisclosed location
in Canada's west coast, released the following statement. "I wish I could have been a part of such a great comeback.
I'm really proud of the team for the way they played tonight and I am now on board wit the thought that this team has a legitimate
chance to win it all. We had yet another fantastic third period. This is exactly what I want from the big Bullets team come
summer. I will be back in the Baby Bullets uniform as soon as possible so that I can contribute my all to the team's remaining
games".
There is no word if Brandon Spears will be back by next week's game,
however it has been speculated that he will be back late Monday night and suit up for the game on Tuesday.
Should the Baby Bullets win next week's game, it would mean an automatic
berth into the finals. A tie or loss will mean that the Baby Bullets would have to rely on other teams to help them clinch
that spot.
"Only a team member can truly understand the confidence level of our
team right now. The energy in our locker room was so high after the game last night. We really feel good about ourselves right
now", Mike Adelson said.
Next week's game will be at 9pm. Stayed connected throughout the coming
weeks for a lot more Baby Bullets and Bullets news!
