BABY BULLETS PREPARING
TO DEFEND CHAMPIONSHIP
September 9th, 2007
The 2007-08 Baby Bullets roster is finally almost
finalized and there is some good news; on paper, the team is even better than last year's championship winning one.
Returning members of the Baby Bullets include Ben Ashkin, Tyler Cohen, Mike Adelson, Brandon Spears, Joey Evans, Ari Greenberg, Mark Leibtog and Max Shuster.
The Baby Bullets are also pleased to welcome a few
new faces to the team.
The biggest question that still lingers is in net.
Previously, Benji Lightstone started, but as he is away attending university, there will be a new face backstopping the Baby
Bullets. Lightstone's replacement has yet to be officially announced. "Hopefully our new starter, whoever it'll be, can
achieve what Benji did for us last season," Brandon Spears told the media.
As the season begins in just over a week, expect
to see team members practicing at local rinks throughout the GTA.
We look forward to your support during the winter
season!
QUITE THE TURNAROUND FOR THE BULLETS IN 2007
August 22nd, 2007
Team Blue 6
Bullets 3
The Bullets started the 2007 season sky high by
winning four of six games. Whatever happened before June 19th, The Bullets just could not replicate for the rest
of the year. It was a dissapointing end to the season last night; a 6-3 beating at the hands of Team Blue.
It was The Bullets fourth straight loss and sixth loss in eight games, the worst stretch of hockey the team has
ever played.
"I don't think we necessairly deserved to lose all
those games," team captain Brandon Spears said.
"We were in them right until the end for the most
part. There's a simple explanation actually - we only made a few mistakes in each game, but our opponents
really took advantage of them. Really, you can look back on every game and see exactly how badly one or two little
blunders cost us in those games," added Mike Adelson.
During last night's game, the spirit and heart
was strong enough for a win, but special teams play put The Bullets in too deep of a hole. One
could say that The Bullets were a little too intense coming into this one and got into penalty trouble accordingly. Mix
that in with a shortened bench and you've got a Bullets team with their backs against the wall.
In total, Team Blue went 3 for 5 on the powerplay
which really put the game away for them. Two of their powerplay goals came during a four goal run in which The Bullets could
never recover.
Brandon Spears played a very spirited game and recorded
points on all three Bullets goals. For the first time in his career he finishes the season as The Bullets' points leader,
which is remarkable considering he missed the first four games due to suspension.
Goaltender Benji Lightstone was peppered with shots all night, facing 26 in all. By contrast, The Bullets got only 15 shots on goal.
A fight towards the end of the game between
Adam Spears and a Team Blue ringer was the low point of the night.
A lot of pride was on the line in this one as the
outcome would decide the winner of the season series.
"We're going to be better next year. We're going
to figure out exactly what went right at the start and why it all changed towards the end," Ben Ashkin said.
The Bullets would like to thank all the fans
for their support all season long and during the past four years. We hope that you will be with us for years to come! Be sure
to check back on this site at least once a month for important updates and other news from your favourite hockey team!
BULLETS DROP THIRD STRAIGHT IN GREASY MATCH
August 15th, 2007
Smashing Pumpkins 7
Bullets 3
The Bullets lost their third straight game last
night at the hands of the Smashing Pumpkins. The game was called in the middle of the third period with the final score recorded
as 7-3.
It was apparent from the start of this one that
it was not going to be Dustin Stroll's best night. Facing only nine shots in the entire first period, Stroll allowed four of them to get by him, and the Bullets
found themselves down by two.
That said, the team in front of Stroll started off
the game with a 'never-die' attitude and took the play to the Pumpkins throughout the first two frames. The Bullets more than
doubled the Pumpkins in shots by the end of the second period, yet now found themselves down by three.
You can never blame an individual player when things
aren't going well and The Bullets did all they could to help out their goaltender during the first two frames. They knew that
if Stroll wasn't on his top form, they would have to turn the game into a high scoring affair and try to win by playing a
highly offensive third period. Unfortunately though, The Bullets were incredibly gassed from their hard efforts during the
first and second, and found themselves on the defensive end during the third.
The Bullets just couldn't get things in order and
the Pumpkins took advantage of this by cycling and getting the puck towards the goal. The pressure paid off with another goal,
and after that Stroll had had enough. He skated after the goalscorer and a scuffle ensued. After breaking up the
heated exchange, the referees ejected Stroll and called the game with 6:31 remaining.
The whole Bullets team was disappointed to say the
least, especially because they have now lost three straight. With only one game remaining, The Bullets need to put everything aside
except for one thing; beating their opponents next week. It has been determined that The Bullets will be playing Team Blue.
The Bullets last victory was against Team Blue back on July 17th. The winner of this game will win the season series between
the teams. The Bullets will look to avoid suffering their fourth straight loss, which would be the longest in team history.
A COMBINATION OF BAD LUCK RESULTS IN BULLETS SECOND STRAIGHT LOSS
August 1st, 2007
Eagles 4
Bullets 2
An absolute brutal referee, both team and individual mistakes
and a very stellar goaltender in the opposing crease cost the Bullets a very winable game.
It was very apparent as the game got underway that
both teams wanted to win and would stop at nothing to do so. Unfortunately, it was the referee who dictated the entire game.
"He may have been the strictest referee we have ever faced. I can count about seven or eight phantom calls for boths sides",
forward Joey Evans explained. By the end of the first period four penalties had been called, three of which went against The Bullets, and they
found themselves trailing by a goal.
The first period was the most even of the game.
As the second started, it was clear that The Bullets wanted it more than the Eagles. But the referee broke The Bullets
momentum three times in the frame. Althought outshooting the Eagles 8-5 in the second, once you add in a couple of fatal team
errors, The Bullets were down by three heading into the third.
The Bullets really smartened up for the third
period. They realized that the only chance they could have at making a comeback would be to play basic hockey and not risk
anything by playing physical. After seeing forward Tyler Cohen get ejected in the second for merely questioning a stoppage in play, The Bullets knew they would also have to keep their
mouths shut.
Early in the third The Bullets cut the lead to two
on Hartley Blumenfeld's second goal of the season. The strategy appeared to be working. The Eagles were called for three infractions,
and on an important 5 on 3, the Bullets struck again on Brandon Spears' fourth goal of the season.
The comeback seemed destined to be achieved, with The
Bullets dominating the entire period. The Eagles' goaltender was fantastic, keeping cool amidst frantic pressure.
It seemed that only the referee could spoil the
comeback, and he certainly delivered in that regard. With goaltender Benji Lightstone pulled, the Eagles attempted a shot at the open net from their own end. A footrace between defenseman Mike Adelson and an opponent ensued, with Adelson being the victor. As he retrieved the puck, the Eagles forward blatantly hooked him
off the puck. The referee turned a blind eye to the play and left his whistle in his pocket, and as Adelson was the only
Bullet back, there was no one else to prevent the Eagles from scoring into the empty net.
"They didn't beat us on skill, thats for sure,"
Dave Preston said.
"The ref really won it for them tonight," added
Adelson, who had two assists in the defeat.
Steven Spears, who missed the game due to a lower body injury, had a few choice words for the referee following the game.
"We didn't play our best hockey tonight, but we
were robbed of a great chance to finish the comeback by the ref," thought Daniel Sherkin.
The Bullets have now dropped to the .500 mark. Hopefully
they can get back above that next week when they take on the Smashing Pumpkins at 10:00pm.
There's only two games left, and we hope to see
you there at both of them!
